Good to know in Florence

  • Transit: Florence's historic center is entirely walkable; use ATAF buses (€1.70/ride or €5 day pass) only for Oltrarno hills or the train station area.
  • Tipping: Tipping is not customary in Italy, a small rounding up (50 cents to €1) at a sit-down meal is appreciated but never expected.
  • Tap water: Florence's tap water is excellent and safe to drink; carry a reusable bottle and refill at the city's free 'nasoni' public fountains.
  • Free-entry days: Italian state museums (Uffizi, Accademia) offer free entry on the first Sunday of every month, book a timed slot online as lines are long.
