Its dense concentration of free and low-cost attractions makes it surprisingly affordable for a city of its stature.

Good to know in Frankfurt

  • Frankfurt's RMV transit network is excellent, buy a day pass (~$9) or a 7-day pass (~$35) rather than single tickets; the airport train takes 11 minutes to the city center.
  • Tipping is customary but modest: round up the bill or add 5-10% at restaurants; simply say the amount you want to pay when handing over cash.
  • Tap water (Leitungswasser) is perfectly safe and delicious throughout Frankfurt, carry a reusable bottle and save several dollars a day.
  • Many Museumsufer museums offer free entry on the last Saturday of each month; the Museum für Moderne Kunst and Städel both participate seasonally, check schedules in advance.
