Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay is one of Southeast Asia's most jaw-dropping natural wonders, where thousands of limestone karsts rise dramatically from emerald waters, and you can experience it all for a fraction of what similar scenery costs elsewhere. Budget cruises, fresh seafood, and a thriving backpacker scene make this UNESCO World Heritage site surprisingly accessible.

Why go to Ha Long Bay

  • Ha Long Bay Cruise

Glide through a surreal seascape of 1,600+ karst islands on an overnight or day cruise, the defining experience of northern Vietnam.

  • Sung Sot (Surprise) Cave

A cathedral-sized grotto illuminated in vivid colors, packed with otherworldly stalactites and stalagmites hidden inside a limestone island.

  • Ti Top Island

Climb 400 steps to a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the entire bay, then cool off on a crescent-shaped beach below.

  • Lan Ha Bay Kayaking

Paddle through hidden lagoons, sea caves, and floating fishing villages in a quieter, equally stunning corner of the bay.

  • Bai Chay Beach & Night Market

Stroll the lively waterfront promenade, haggle for souvenirs, and feast on grilled squid as the bay lights up at night.

Not feeling Ha Long Bay?

Good to know in Ha Long Bay

  • Take the comfortable Hanoi-Ha Long limousine bus (Duc Duong or Hung Thanh lines) for about $7-10 each way rather than tourist shuttle vans, which can cost twice as much.
  • Tipping is not culturally mandatory but is appreciated, $1-2 per day for cruise crew and $1 for guides is generous and welcomed.
  • Do not drink tap water anywhere in Ha Long Bay; buy bottled water (about $0.25/bottle) or refill at your guesthouse if they offer filtered water.
  • Ha Long Bay has no official free-entry days, but some caves reduce or waive fees for Vietnamese national holidays, always ask at the pier.
