Santorini

Santorini is one of the Aegean's most iconic islands, famous for its caldera views, whitewashed villages, and volcanic beaches. With smart timing, budget accommodation in lesser-known villages, and local tavernas, you can experience its magic without the luxury price tag.

Why go to Santorini

  • Oia Sunset

The world-famous blue-domed village perched on the caldera rim turns gold and crimson at dusk, absolutely free and utterly unforgettable.

  • Akrotiri Archaeological Site

A remarkably preserved Minoan Bronze Age city buried by the volcanic eruption of 1600 BC, often called the 'Greek Pompeii.'

  • Red Beach (Kokkini Paralia)

Dramatic rust-red volcanic cliffs plunge into vivid turquoise water, creating one of the most surreal beach scenes in Europe.

  • Ancient Thera

Hike or drive to a mountaintop Hellenistic-Roman city with sweeping views over the entire island and the caldera below.

  • Caldera Boat Tour

Sail around the volcanic crater, swim in hot springs, and visit the still-active Nea Kameni volcano on a half-day group cruise.

Good to know in Santorini

  • The public KTEL bus network connects Fira to Oia, Perissa, Akrotiri, and the airport for $2-3 per ride, skip the $25+ taxis for most routes.
  • Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory; rounding up or leaving 5-10% at sit-down restaurants is the local norm.
  • Tap water is NOT safe to drink in Santorini, buy large 1.5L bottles from supermarkets for $0.50-1 rather than paying tourist prices at cafes.
  • Akrotiri Archaeological Site offers free entry on national holidays including March 25, October 28, and the first Sunday of each month from November through March.
