Berlin

Berlin is one of Europe's most affordable capitals, blending world-class museums, raw street art, and legendary nightlife on a shoestring budget. Cheap eats, free galleries, and a vast public transit network make it exceptional value for travelers.

Why go to Berlin

  • Brandenburg Gate

Berlin's iconic 18th-century triumphal arch standing at the heart of the reunified city, free and stunning at any hour.

  • Museum Island (Museumsinsel)

Five UNESCO-listed museums on one island, including the breathtaking Pergamon Altar and the bust of Nefertiti.

  • East Side Gallery

A 1.3 km open-air stretch of the original Berlin Wall covered in vivid murals by artists from around the world.

  • Reichstag Glass Dome

Climb the futuristic dome atop Germany's parliament for panoramic city views, completely free with advance registration.

  • Holocaust Memorial (Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe)

A hauntingly powerful field of 2,711 concrete slabs steps from the Brandenburg Gate, free to enter and deeply moving.

Good to know in Berlin

  • Buy a Berlin WelcomeCard or 7-day AB zone transit pass (~$40) for unlimited U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram, and bus rides, far cheaper than buying single tickets daily.
  • Tipping is appreciated but modest: rounding up the bill or leaving 5-10% is standard; saying 'Stimmt so' means 'keep the change.'
  • Tap water (Leitungswasser) is clean, safe, and excellent quality throughout Berlin, carry a refillable bottle and skip bottled water entirely.
  • Many state museums offer free entry on select days: Hamburger Bahnhof and other Staatliche Museen are free the first Sunday of each month, and the Reichstag dome is always free.
