Good to know in Hurghada

  • Transit: Minibuses (microbuses) between El Dahar and the resort strip cost under $0.50; tuk-tuks are cheap for short hops but agree on a price before boarding.
  • Tipping: Tipping is deeply embedded in Egyptian culture, tip hotel staff $1-2/day, restaurant servers 10%, and tour guides $3-5 per person.
  • Tap water: Do NOT drink tap water; buy bottled water (large 1.5L bottles cost $0.30-0.50 at local shops, avoid hotel mini-bar prices).
  • Free entry: Many public beaches and the Corniche are always free; some resort day-pass beaches waive fees if you spend a minimum at their restaurant.
