Kyoto

Kyoto, Japan's ancient imperial capital, dazzles with thousands of temples, bamboo groves, and geisha districts at surprisingly affordable prices. Street food, cheap set-lunch deals, and free-to-enter shrine grounds mean you can experience world-class culture without a world-class budget.

Why go to Kyoto

  • Fushimi Inari Taisha

Hike through thousands of vermillion torii gates winding up a sacred mountain, free and unforgettable at dawn.

  • Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion)

A stunning gold-leaf temple reflected in a mirror pond, one of Japan's most iconic images.

  • Arashiyama Bamboo Grove & Tenryu-ji

Walk through towering bamboo corridors and explore a UNESCO-listed Zen garden beside a serene river.

  • Gion District & Geisha Culture

Wander lantern-lit cobblestone streets and, if lucky, spot a real maiko gliding between teahouses.

  • Nijo Castle

A UNESCO World Heritage shogun palace with 'nightingale floors' that chirp underfoot to alert guards.

Not feeling Kyoto?

Good to know in Kyoto

  • Transit: A one-day Kyoto City Bus pass (~$5.50) covers most major sights; combine with the Kyoto subway for Arashiyama and outlying areas to avoid per-ride costs.
  • Tipping: Tipping is not practiced in Japan and can even cause offense, simply bow and say 'arigatou gozaimasu' to thank staff.
  • Tap water: Tap water in Kyoto is clean, safe, and great-tasting, carry a refillable bottle and skip buying plastic bottles entirely.
  • Free-entry days: Many public parks and shrine grounds (Fushimi Inari, Heian Shrine exterior, Kamigamo Shrine) are always free; the second Sunday of each month offers discounted entry at select municipal museums.
