Good to know in Merida
- Transit: Colectivo minibuses and combis cover most routes for about $0.50; taxis are cheap but always agree on the fare before riding, Uber also works well in Mérida.
- Tipping: 10-15% is appreciated at sit-down restaurants; rounding up or leaving $5-10 MXN at taquerías and markets is generous and welcomed.
- Tap water: Do not drink tap water, buy a large garrafón (jug) at any OXXO or supermarket for about $1.50, or use a filter bottle.
- Free-entry days: The Gran Museo del Mundo Maya is free on Sundays for Mexican nationals; state archaeological sites are free on Sundays for all visitors, including non-nationals.
