Good to know in San Miguel de Allende
- Transit: Taxis within town are cheap at $2-4 a ride, but the city is extremely walkable, Centro is roughly 10 blocks across, so skip the cab whenever possible.
- Tipping: 10-15% is the local norm at sit-down restaurants; 10% is appreciated at comedores and taquerías. Taxi drivers don't expect tips but rounding up is kind.
- Tap water: Do NOT drink tap water, locals and expats alike use garrafones (19-liter jugs). Buy bottled water at any tienda for about $0.25 a liter or use a filtered bottle.
- Free-entry days: The Instituto Allende galleries and Fábrica La Aurora are always free; national INAH museum sites (like Zona Arqueológica Cañada de la Virgen nearby) offer free entry every Sunday for Mexican nationals, but foreign visitors pay a small fee (~$4).
