Muscat
Muscat is a surprisingly affordable Gulf capital where dramatic mountain-meets-sea scenery, opulent mosques, and spice-filled souqs come without Dubai-level price tags. Flights are often cheaper than to its neighbors, and quality accommodation, food, and experiences cost a fraction of what you'd pay in Abu Dhabi or Doha.
Why go to Muscat
Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque
One of the world's most breathtaking mosques, home to a massive hand-loomed Persian carpet and an enormous Swarovski chandelier, free to enter most mornings.
Mutrah Souq
A labyrinthine covered market overflowing with frankincense, silver Khanjar daggers, spices, and textiles, the most atmospheric bazaar in the Gulf.
Royal Opera House Muscat
A world-class venue staging international opera, ballet, and concerts in an exquisitely ornate setting, with affordable ticket tiers starting around $15.
Wadi Shab
A stunning emerald canyon a couple hours from Muscat where you swim through gorges and discover hidden waterfalls, pure adventure for almost nothing.
Al Jalali & Al Mirani Forts
Twin 16th-century Portuguese forts guarding Muscat's harbor create one of the most dramatic coastal fortress views in the Middle East.

Good to know in Muscat
- Transit: Muscat's Mwasalat bus network covers major routes for $0.25-1 per ride; taxis exist but always agree on a price first or insist on the meter, ride-hailing app Otaxi is cheaper and more transparent.
- Tipping: Not mandatory or deeply ingrained in Omani culture, but rounding up or leaving 10% at restaurants is appreciated; hotel porters expect around $1-2 per bag.
- Tap water: Tap water is technically treated but locals and most expats drink bottled water, a large 1.5L bottle costs under $0.50 at any supermarket, so budget accordingly.
- Free-entry days: The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is free every day it's open to visitors; the Bait Al Zubair Museum occasionally offers free entry on Omani national holidays, check local listings around November 18 (National Day).
