Things to do in Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum is Jordan's otherworldly red desert, offering dramatic sandstone landscapes, Bedouin culture, and stargazing that rivals anywhere on Earth, all at a fraction of what similar desert experiences cost in the Gulf or Morocco. Staying in a traditional Bedouin camp keeps costs low while delivering an unforgettable, immersive experience.

Great for first-timers

Why go to Wadi Rum

  • Lawrence's Spring

A storied freshwater spring amid towering red cliffs linked to T.E. Lawrence's Arabian campaigns.

A narrow siq filled with ancient Nabataean and Thamudic rock inscriptions stretching back thousands of years.

  • The Seven Pillars of Wisdom

A massive, iconic rock formation visible near the visitor center that defines the Wadi Rum skyline.

  • Sunset at Um Fruth Rock Bridge

One of several natural rock bridges you can scramble up for jaw-dropping panoramic desert views at golden hour.

  • Bedouin Camp Overnight Stargazing

Sleep under a sky so dark and clear that the Milky Way looks painted overhead, one of the best stargazing spots on the planet.

Good to know in Wadi Rum

  • Transit: JETT buses run from Amman to Aqaba (~$10-12), then a shared taxi or minibus to Wadi Rum village costs ~$5-8; renting a private car is far pricier but convenient.
  • Tipping: Tip Bedouin guides and drivers 10-15%, it's culturally appreciated and forms a significant part of their income in the desert economy.
  • Tap water: Do not drink tap water anywhere in Wadi Rum or Jordan; buy bottled water (about $0.50/1.5L in Aqaba, stock up before entering the reserve).
  • Free entry days: The Jordan Pass ($70-80 total) includes Wadi Rum entry ($5) and Petra, making it excellent value if you're visiting both, no separate free-entry days exist, but the Pass pays for itself quickly.
